Reported April 2009
RESCUE WORKER TRAINING: In order to train rescue workers in a realistic, but structurally stable environment, civil engineers designed a 40 by 160 foot pile of rubble, designed to replicate the conditions of an apartment building collapsed atop a parking garage. It enables rescue teams to simulate an eight-hour search and rescue operation as they make their way through a pile of steel, concrete and crushed vehicles, attempting to locate mock victims trapped inside.
The American Society of Civil Engineers and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.-USA contributed to the information contained in the TV portion of this report.
