Labs in the Lab: The Dog Health Study

(Ivanhoe Newswire) – Dogs are man’s best friend, and who wouldn’t love a loyal companion by their side? Because of the love many people feel for their furry pals, their health is important, but still not very much research has been done to understand dog diseases. Now, a UK study is turning their attention towards dogs to shed further light on our canines’ health.

The study, dubbed the Dogslife project, followed 1,407 Labrador Retrievers born after January 1st, 2010 and registered with the Kennel Club via the internet.

“We hope to follow the health of these dogs throughout their lives so that we can identify aspects of care which might reduce the risk of dogs developing disease in the future," researcher Dr. Dylan Clements from the Royal School of Veterinary Studies and The Roslin Institute at the University of Edinburgh was quoted as saying.

Researchers were able to conclude that four out of every ten dogs in study were sick at some point and that 80% of dogs have been ill before completing their first year of life.

However, out of the 80%, only half of the dogs were thought to be sick enough to go to the vet by their owners.
The Dogslife project is still very early on in their research and there is more insight into canine health to be discovered. For those wondering why the Labrador Retriever was the dog of choice…

"Labrador Retrievers are the most popular pedigree dog in the UK, and breeders and owners are passionate about the health of their pets,” Dr. Clements was quoted as saying.

In any case, pet-lovers should feel better knowing someone’s on the case to help keep their dogs healthy.
