Smartphone App Improves Colonoscopy Preparation
(Ivanhoe Newswire) – Researchers at Arizona Digestive Health in Phoenix discovered that the use of a smartphone application, called the “Arizona Digestive Health app,” greatly improves patients’ preparation for a colonoscopy.
The study compared the quality of bowel preparation in patients who used the app and in those who did not. Nilay Kavathia, MD, a gastroenterology fellow at Phoenix VA and Banner Health and one of the application’s developers, found that 84 percent of individuals who used the app got a good score on the 9-point Boston Bowel Preparation Scale, as compared to only 56 percent of those who didn’t use the app who received a good score.
“Getting ready for a colonoscopy is difficult. There are a lot of steps. For patients, having an interactive, simplified and personalized app on their phone is like having a doctor at their side throughout the process,” Dr. Kavathia was quoted as saying.
