TGIF! Turning Grease Into Fuel
WESTERLEY, R.I. (Ivanhoe Newswire) --The combination of the winter months and a bad economy makes it tough for many families to heat their homes, but one young teen has created a program that uses cooking oil to heat homes.
The same oil used to heat up these delicious rice balls is now heating homes.
“I was shocked when I found out people in my own community couldn’t afford to heat their homes.” Cassandra Lin, co-founder of Project T.G.I.F told Ivanhoe.
That’s when thirteen-year-old Cassandra Lin launched T.G.I.F-- Turn Grease Into Fuel.
After learning about the refining process, Cassandra and her team convinced their town council to place a grease receptacle at the town’s transfer center so the people there could donate their used cooking oil.
“I wanted to do this because I wanted to help needy people and families,” Taylor Fiore-Chettiar, a Project T.G.I.F participant told Ivanhoe.
“I saw a need in the community and I thought this was something I could do to help,”John Perino, a Project T.G.I.F participant told Ivanhoe.
Within six months, 95 restaurants and thousands of people collected more than 36,000 gallons of used oil. T.G.I.F sells it to local bio fuel companies.
“At the end of the night we empty out the fry oil and we get to heat a lot of homes from that,” one business owner told Ivanhoe.
Since 2008 T.G.I. F earned more than $50,000. That money goes to help people pay their heating bill. Home owner and single mother of two Elizabeth Phend is relying on that help this winter.
“The heating assistance has allowed me to go to bed at night with piece of mind,” Elizabeth Phend told Ivanhoe.
The project helped take her heating bill from $1,300 a year to $700.
“I am very passionate about the environment,”Vanessa Bertsch, a Project T.G.I.F participant told Ivanhoe.
“I wanted to create a better world for the next generation,” Miles Temel, a Project T.G.I.F participant told Ivanhoe.
